Digital Health App for Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)

Kranus Health

Kranus Lutera is a specialized digital health application designed to support men experiencing Incontinence and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS).

It is a personalized, holistic 12-week therapy encompassing bladder training, pelvic floor training, physiotherapy and mental training. Additional modules are The Diary where users are able to track their voiding and drinking progress over the weeks, and Urge Stop, where users distract themselves from the urgent feeling to go to the toilet.

As the lead designer on this project, I took on a critical role in shaping the user experience, prioritizing accessibility, usability, and effectiveness.

Balancing business objectives, engineering limitations with patient needs was essential. A strategic approach to design was required to align the stakeholders' goals, in a short time frame, with the unique requirements of our target group.

Responsibility

Product Design

Visual Design

  • Led the UX/UI design efforts, collaborating with the Project Manager, our Medical team, Engineers and stakeholders to define the application's scope, features, and functionalities.

  • Designed intuitive user interfaces and engaging content layouts to facilitate seamless navigation, interaction, and engagement.

  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams, including developers and content creators, to ensure alignment, integration, and successful implementation of the therapy program.

Challenges & Solutions

  • User Accessibility: Prioritized intuitive design for older men unfamiliar with digital products, ensuring inclusivity and ease of use.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensured adherence to stringent medical and privacy standards

  • Competitive Positioning: Conducted benchmarking and competitor analysis to refine features and differentiate Kranus Lutera

Tools and Methodologies

  • Tools: Utilized Figma for design collaboration, prototyping, and iterative testing.

  • Methodologies: Adopted a user-centered design approach, followed agile methodologies, and incorporated feedback loops for continuous improvement.

  • Techniques: Conducted user interviews, designed wireframes, prototypes, and usability testing to validate and refine design solutions.

Processes

I utilized interviews as a strategic tool to uncover patient needs. The in-depth interviews with patients suffering from LUTS, focused on symptoms, limitations and their current journey.

Additionally, the interviews are supplemented by a prototype test using an exemplary screen, in order to test possible features and the design with potential users.

The UX Research was in collaboration with The Next Now agency.

LUTS slowly crept into their lives, making them forced to adapt their lives into their increasing symptoms. On a personal level, it is highly emotionally charged with shame, especially for young sufferers and for older people with the non-acceptance of ageing.

The social stigma attached to the topic makes it difficult to discuss and leads to, in most cases, hide their suffer.

“Was denken die Leute.

lo-fi to hi-fi

In the initial stages of the project, we began the journey by sketching out our ideas on paper, transitioning from low-fidelity mockups to high-fidelity prototypes. Throughout this process, aligning with various stakeholders was crucial to ensure we were meeting both business objectives and patient needs.

Following a successful study phase, I'm pleased to share that Kranus Lutera is currently in the process of transitioning to the market.

Receiving feedback from study patients has great. I'm proud to state that users have expressed improvements in their daily lives, demonstrating the positive impact of our therapy and the value it brings to them managing these health challenges on day to day basis.
